Description
This course has taken over 10 years of workshops, research, testing, trial-and-error to develop, and has been created for art and design students, for those who enjoy design and the creative process, as well as for professionals who feel they could benefit from a better understanding how great design works. It’s also been designed for educators as a highly useful, supplemental, asynchronous resource. A key benefit for educators can be realized by how this course can help reduce the necessity for direct, remedial intervention concerning issues of structure. A secondary benefit can be realized by improved student and team performance. A tertiary benefit can be realized through more effective educational scaffolding.
Understanding unity and rhythm is powerfully liberating! Understanding rhythm has traditionally been a challenge for many to grasp, but that was then – this is now.
Will this course cover most of what you need to know about design? Heaven’s no! That would assume so much go right on the viewer’s end. It’s more realistic to achieve a solid foundation vs. an overall jammed-up romp. Indeed, this is not your grandfather’s design course – nor your uncle’s.
This course dives deep into two main principles that will prove to be highly beneficial if your goal is to become better at whichever aspect of the visual arts you wish to embrace.
Learn how simple good design can be.
Keep the viewer involved. History is littered with great ideas, poorly expressed. Relevance to the viewer generally exists within a decreasingly small timeframe, especially now. Learn the techniques that extend viewer engagement.

Testimonials
“Unity and rhythm elegantly explained and demonstrated. A powerful prequel for all art and design students.” Wayne Hunt, Adjunct Professor, Art Center College of Design; Pasadena, Ca
“Design can be something that dawns on you while you are drawing, painting, arranging type, shooting photos, etc. But you need to have been exposed to it in simple terms in the first place, so you start to know it when you see it.” Kenneth Jones, artist and Lecturer, Gnomon; California State University Northridge; Northridge, Ca
“I’m moving the family North for a new job in Cupertino, and I have your workshop to thank, in part, for it. It was partially some of the tweaks that I made to my design process after attending your workshop that led to the client work, that went into the portfolio that landed me the job designing for, Apple.” Andrew O., Project Manager, Apple Computer, Cupertino, Ca
“The…concept of repetition and variation and how if that is followed it can produce a real nice design. I plan on keeping that in the back of my mind forever.” Laura C., Sr. Graphic Designer, Los Angeles, Ca
“This was an eye opener.“ Edward C., UX/UI Designer/Developer, Moorpark, Ca
