In this course you’ll learn how to determine, establish, assess, and update compliance obligations using a step-by-step approach. You’ll learn about compliance obligations as the relate to specific clauses.
You’ll see some notes on the screen, which I’ll explain. I recommend using a guide while read the notes on the screen, and taking notes as you’re doing so, to best comprehend each lesson.
Compliance obligations can be required by laws or legislations and be things that you have to do in order to a permit or a license and continue functioning as an organization. These are mandatory obligations. There also voluntary obligations, which once you choose to fulfill become mandatory. Voluntary obligations can include things like adhering to a code of conduct or complying with a standard like ISO 14001.
Top leadership shows a commitment to meeting the requirements of these compliance obligations. They have to match each compliance obligation with an environmental performance objective and make sure it is being achieved. In the case of non-conformity they must take corrective action to correct the issue, and take further action to make sure the issue doesn’t occur again. Processes to measure and monitor these environmental aspects at regular intervals need to be in place, and re-evaluated regularly.
Compliance obligations need to be regularly updated so as to make sure the organization is up-to-date with existing laws, regulations and is prepared for future changes to the like.
All these things should be done with a life cycle perspective, and should not be limited to the organizations operations on-site.
